From one of Matthew's children:
As many of you may know, my father, Matthew Mackin Johnston, passed away on Wednesday, 3/19/25, at 70 years old. He succumbed to the effects of Huntington's Disease, which he had been diagnosed with in 2015. Dad was a science-loving, kilt-wearing, Guinness-drinking Irishman to the end, listening to Irish jigs until his last day.
He is survived by his five children, Rebecca Johnston (51), Isaac Johnston (49), Elisabeth Johnston (47), William Johnston (45), and Daniel Johnston (44), as well as two grandchildren, Lachlan Johnston (10) and Arlo Johnston (8). In addition he is survived by five of his 8 siblings.
There will be a Celebration of Life event held on May 10th, 2025, at 2pm at 20 Windsor Lane, #209, New Brighton, MN, 55112. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact Rebecca Johnston at rebeccaj043@gmail.com or 612-281-3276.

An obituary will be added when it becomes available. This is from his sister's Facebook page:
My dear younger brother, Matthew Mackin Johnston, 70, peacefully passed away on Wednesday evening in Robbinsdale, MN, with family members by his side. Matt was sixteen months younger than me, and we were very close growing up. He was a very intelligent, unique guy, an electrical engineer and scientist who wrote three patents, a man who loved Ireland, Irish music and everything Irish. Matt also loved being around people, and he definitely possessed a sense of humor and the Irish “gift of gab.” A talented guy, he played the bodrun for fun in a Celtic band at his favorite hangout in Minneapolis, Merlin’s Pub. Matt had five children two grandsons, and five of nine surviving siblings. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Matt was a good guy. I remember he used to visit me when I was doing my workstudy job in Mr. Schmidt's physics lab. We would conduct a few mad scientist experiments that were beyond the scope of the regular curriculum and always have a few laughs. I was sorry to hear of his passing.

Much love to you and your family, Rebecca. I know HD was a long, difficult journey for your Dad and your family. May God use all of this to draw you closer to one another and be strengthened together. I will be thinking of you all and saying a prayer.
