STURGIS - Gary Baier was born April 3, 1954, in Portland, Ore., and came to South Dakota with his parents in 1963. He graduated from Central High School in Rapid City in 1972. He joined the U.S. Army on May 9, 1973 and was stationed with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo. He graduated from the U.S. Army Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, Va., prior to his assignment at Fort Carson. He was honorably discharged May 7, 1976. After his discharge he returned to South Dakota and was self employed all of his working years in refrigeration, home heating units, air conditioning, and appliance repair. At one time he owned and operated the Quality Mart Appliance and furniture store in Belle Fourche. He is survived by two sons from a previous marriage, Greg Baier and Jeff Baier, both of Sturgis; two granddaughters, Keylee and Jazlynn, Rapid City; his parents, Edward and Hilda (Sandy) Baier, Sturgis; one brother, Brian Baier, Lead; one sister, Karen Whitford, Sturgis; Connie Baier, Belle Fourche; two stepchildren and several grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary had courageously fought cancer for the past 10 years prior to his death on Sunday, March 14, 2010. He has requested cremation. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 19, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery.
